Fungus-Cancer Link

Happy Saturday,

I have been working on a protocol for yeast & fungal issues because I have been hearing more and more about their connection to various symptoms, conditions and diseases.

I found the following excerpts on Dr. Mercola's site @ www.mercola.com:

"Dr. Dave Holland is the co-author, with Doug Kaufmann, of the best-selling book The Fungus Link, and the new book, The Fungus Link Vol. 2. In these books, and in their other books (Infectious Diabetes, and The Germ that Causes Cancer) they discuss the ravages that yeast, fungi and their mycotoxins (fungal toxins) can cause us when we are exposed to them. Health problems ranging from cancer to heart disease to asthma, multiple sclerosis, and diabetes may all be related to mycotoxins.

Mycotoxins cause a wide range of health problems in humans when we are exposed to small amounts over an extended period of time, and can even be lethal if taken in large quantities over a short period of time. Given the large number of diseases linked to mycotoxins* (see Dr. Holland’s list at the end of the article) and our tendency to eat a large amount of grains in our typical American diet, this is a very concerning problem. As Dr. Holland said, "Grains are sources of carbohydrates, or sugars, and as such, they risk contamination by certain fungi. These fungi produce secondary metabolites, or mycotoxins."

This is quite a list as you can see. Even dandruff and athletes foot are considered fungal related issues.

Cancer is now the number one killer in America and there is no known cause or perfect cure. As stated by Italian oncologist Dr. Tullio Simoncini -- author of "Cancer is a Fungus," if you are diagnosed with cancer, especially in the U.S., you are given three options which are not effective and can even be more deadly:

1.Surgery
2.Chemotherapy
3.Radiation

Furthermore he states the folowing:
*Finding actual statistics on the effectiveness of these treatments is very difficult.
*Most people are given a 50/50 chance of dying from cancer, in general.
*Polls and questionnaires show that a full 75 percent of doctors say they’d refuse chemotherapy.

Dr. Tullio Simoncini believes we are way off with the conventional treatment to cancer and believes fungus overgrowth is the culprit. Many others are in agreement with him and are treating cancer with phenomenal results.

Before the Appleton Wisconsin high school replaced their cafeteria's processed foods with wholesome, nutritious food, the school was described as out-of-control. There were weapons violations, student disruptions, and a cop on duty full-time. After the change in school meals, the students were calm, focused, and orderly. There were no more weapons violations, and no suicides, expulsions, dropouts, or drug violations. The new diet and improved behavior has lasted for seven years, and now other schools are changing their meal programs with similar results.

Years ago, a science class at Appleton found support for their new diet by conducting a cruel and unusual experiment with three mice. They fed them the junk food that kids in other high schools eat everyday. The mice freaked out. Their behavior was totally different than the three mice in the neighboring cage. The neighboring mice had good karma; they were fed nutritious whole foods and behaved like mice. They slept during the day inside their cardboard tube, played with each other, and acted very mouse-like.

The junk food mice, on the other hand, destroyed their cardboard tube, were no longer nocturnal, stopped playing with each other, fought often, and two mice eventually killed the third and ate it. After the three month experiment, the students rehabilitated the two surviving junk food mice with a diet of whole foods. After about three weeks, the mice came around.

Sister Luigi Frigo repeats this experiment every year in her second grade class in Cudahy, Wisconsin, but mercifully, for only four days. Even on the first day of junk food, the mice's behavior "changes drastically." They become lazy, antisocial, and nervous. And it still takes the mice about two to three weeks on unprocessed foods to return to normal. One year, the second graders tried to do the experiment again a few months later with the same mice, but this time the animals refused to eat the junk food.

Across the ocean in Holland, a student fed one group of mice genetically modified (GM) corn and soy, and another group the non-GM variety. The GM mice stopped playing with each other and withdrew into their own parts of the cage. When the student tried to pick them up, unlike their well-behaved neighbors, the GM mice scampered around in apparent fear and tried to climb the walls. One mouse in the GM group was found dead at the end of the experiment.

It's interesting to note that the junk food fed to the mice in the Wisconsin experiments also contained genetically modified ingredients. And although the Appleton school lunch program did not specifically attempt to remove GM foods, it happened anyway. That's because GM foods such as soy and corn and their derivatives are largely found in processed foods. So when the school switched to unprocessed alternatives, almost all ingredients derived from GM crops were taken out automatically.

Does this mean that GM foods negatively affect the behavior of humans or animals? It would certainly be irresponsible to say so on the basis of a single student mice experiment and the results at Appleton. On the other hand, it is equally irresponsible to say that it doesn't.

We are just beginning to understand the influence of food on behavior. A study in Science in December 2002 concluded that "food molecules act like hormones, regulating body functioning and triggering cell division. The molecules can cause mental imbalances ranging from attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder to serious mental illness." The problem is we do not know which food molecules have what effect.

The bigger problem is that the composition of GM foods can change radically without our knowledge. Genetically modified foods have genes inserted into their DNA. But genes are not Legos; they don't just snap into place. Gene insertion creates unpredicted, irreversible changes. In one study, for example, a gene chip monitored the DNA before and after a single foreign gene was inserted. As much as 5 percent of the DNA's genes changed the amount of protein they were producing. Not only is that huge in itself, but these changes can multiply through complex interactions down the line.

In spite of the potential for dramatic changes in the composition of GM foods, they are typically measured for only a small number of known nutrient levels. But even if we could identify all the changed compounds, at this point we wouldn't know which might be responsible for the antisocial nature of mice or humans. Likewise, we are only beginning to identify the medicinal compounds in food. We now know, for example, that the pigment in blueberries may revive the brain's neural communication system, and the antioxidant found in grape skins may fight cancer and reduce heart disease. But what about other valuable compounds we don't know about that might change or disappear in GM varieties?

Consider GM soy. In July 1999, years after it was on the market, independent researchers published a study showing that it contains 12-14 percent less cancer-fighting phytoestrogens. What else has changed that we don't know about? [Monsanto responded with its own study, which concluded that soy's phytoestrogen levels vary too much to even carry out a statistical analysis. They failed to disclose, however, that the laboratory that conducted Monsanto's experiment had been instructed to use an obsolete method to detect phytoestrogens results.]

In 1996, Monsanto published a paper in the Journal of Nutrition that concluded in the title, "The composition of glyphosate-tolerant soybean seeds is equivalent to that of conventional soybeans." The study only compared a small number of nutrients and a close look at their charts revealed significant differences in the fat, ash, and carbohydrate content. In addition, GM soy meal contained 27 percent more trypsin inhibitor, a well-known soy allergen. The study also used questionable methods. Nutrient comparisons are routinely conducted on plants grown in identical conditions so that variables such as weather and soil can be ruled out. Otherwise, differences in plant composition could be easily missed. In Monsanto's study, soybeans were planted in widely varying climates and geography.

Although one of their trials was a side-by-side comparison between GM and non-GM soy, for some reason the results were left out of the paper altogether. Years later, a medical writer found the missing data in the archives of the Journal of Nutrition and made them public. No wonder the scientists left them out. The GM soy showed significantly lower levels of protein, a fatty acid, and phenylalanine, an essential amino acid. Also, toasted GM soy meal contained nearly twice the amount of a lectin that may block the body's ability to assimilate other nutrients. Furthermore, the toasted GM soy contained as much as seven times the amount of trypsin inhibitor, indicating that the allergen may survive cooking more in the GM variety. (This might explain the 50 percent jump in soy allergies in the UK, just after GM soy was introduced.)

We don't know all the changes that occur with genetic engineering, but certainly GM crops are not the same. Ask the animals. Eyewitness reports from all over North America describe how several types of animals, when given a choice, avoided eating GM food. These included cows, pigs, elk, deer, raccoons, squirrels, rats, and mice. In fact, the Dutch student mentioned above first determined that his mice had a two-to-one preference for non-GM before forcing half of them to eat only the engineered variety.

Differences in GM food will likely have a much larger impact on children. They are three to four times more susceptible to allergies. Also, they convert more of the food into body-building material. Altered nutrients or added toxins can result in developmental problems. For this reason, animal nutrition studies are typically conducted on young, developing animals. After the feeding trial, organs are weighed and often studied under magnification. If scientists used mature animals instead of young ones, even severe nutritional problems might not be detected. The Monsanto study used mature animals instead of young ones.

They also diluted their GM soy with non-GM protein 10- or 12­fold before feeding the animals. And they never weighed the organs or examined them under a microscope. The study, which is the only major animal feeding study on GM soy ever published, is dismissed by critics as rigged to avoid finding problems.

Unfortunately, there is a much bigger experiment going on one which we are all a part of. We're being fed GM foods daily, without knowing the impact of these foods on our health, our behavior, or our children. Thousands of schools around the world, particularly in Europe, have decided not to let their kids be used as guinea pigs. They have banned GM foods.

The impact of changes in the composition of GM foods is only one of several reasons why these foods may be dangerous. Other reasons may be far worse (see http://www.seedsofdeception.com).

With the epidemic of obesity and diabetes and with the results in Appleton, parents and schools are waking up to the critical role that diet plays. When making changes in what kids eat, removing GM foods should be a priority.

Game Plan

I have been giving a lot of seminars lately on how one can achieve a decrease in body fat, pain & stress. Here are some of the highlights:

It doesn’t have to be hard if you have a plan, up to date knowledge and an experienced coach. The more time I spend on a game plan the better my clients do. We all need structure in our lives when it comes to our health & fitness goals because we tend to put ourselves last on the list. We need to prioritize what we need & want given we are bombarded with so many unimportant things that take up time in our daily lives.

There must be an understanding of the complexity of the human system. You are a holistic being and there is a relationship between:
1. Mind, Body & Spirit
2. Physical, Chemical & Mental
3. Career, Health & Relationships-Source: Chris Howard

If one side of the equation is unbalanced it will create problems in other areas. If you are having pain (health problem, your relationships will be affected given your mood will often times be depressed and your career will often be affected. Another scenario...if you are having troubles with your wife or husband (relationship issues), often times your career and health will be affected.

Create The Life You Desire-This starts when you decide to make a change for something better for yourself! Make today the day you strive for something more for yourself. Have you been putting off your goals? What are you waiting for? There will never be the right time.

Become The Change You Desire-See yourself as the person you want to be and live your life as if you already accomplished your goal. If you want to be healthy and lose some body fat, think as if you are already at your goal body fat. What kind of lifestyle does it take to maintain this goal? It takes consistency in your food patterns and exercise habits.

Develop a Game Plan and work with a coach to create structure in your life.

Review the Game Plan from your coach every week.

Revise your goals with your coach every 4-8 weeks to avoid plateaus.

If you are still eating processed foods and wonder why you can't lose weight, have low energy, pain and stress look at the chemicals on the packages of the foods you are consuming. Most think they are eating healthy even if they consume foods at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. If the food has a label it probably isn't that great for you. How do you know? Look at the label and see what is preserving the food so it stays on the shelf. Not a week goes by where someone says their breakfast is healthy and they proceed to tell me they are eating a Kashi Cereal. Who said Kashi was good for you? I used to eat it and as soon as I learned more about it and stopped, so did my gas and bloating. We have observed the same thing with many others as well. Most cereals are highly processed as are most of the foods we are eating. Just because you are not eating McDonalds doesn't mean your diet is not processed. Be careful what you eat. Finding the Right Personal Trainer for You

Happy Saturday,

I just read a good article on the net on how to find a good trainer and thought I would attach it here. You have to be careful when choosing a personal trainer given there is no licensing in this field. There out is no one watching out for your best interest and anyone can be a trainer in about a week.

At the Optimal Fitness Center, we pride ourselves in our educated staff, especially our Personal Trainers. After receiving a National Certification, our trainers undergo continuing education on and off site with some of the best practitioners in the world. Many have degrees in Exercise Physiology or Exercise Science but even the academic institutions do not teach us how to be good trainers.

Our trainers our really not just Personal Trainers...they are Athletic Performance Specialists and Lifestyle Coaches given most have studied nutrition, coaching, eastern models of healing (yoga, chi gong, chakra systems, martial arts, acupressure, etc), corrective exercise and the basic western forms of strength training, stretching, aerobic exercise and more.

Choosing a Personal Trainer

Why a trainer may be right for you

If you want to lose weight, get healthy and/or build muscle, hiring a personal trainer can be a step in the right direction. A good trainer can help you set up a program that meets your goals and teach you the best way to exercise. Here's what you should know before you hand over the cash.

What is a Personal Trainer?

A personal trainer should be, at the least, educated and certified through a reputable fitness organization (see below). This person's job is to assess your fitness level, set up a program for you and keep you motivated. He or she will push you past your comfort level--something difficult to do on your own. A trainer also provides:

  • guidance on reaching your goals
  • education about strength training, cardio and basic nutrition
  • a reason to show up at the gym each week
  • accountability
  • ways to help track your progress

What is a Session Like?

Each session lasts about an hour. The first meeting is devoted to assessing fitness level, body measurements, exercise and health history and goals. Be prepared to step on the scale, have your body fat tested and answer specific questions about your goals. After that, you'll spend most of your time on strength training and cardio.

What to Look for In a Personal Trainer

  • Education: A personal trainer should be certified through a reputable fitness organization such as ACSM, ACE or NSCA). An exercise science or other related college degree isn't necessary, but the more education your trainer has, the better your workouts will be.
  • CPR: your trainer should have an updated certification in CPR and/or first aid.
  • Experience: Make sure your trainer has several years of experience, especially in relation to your goals. For example, if you're a bodybuilder, you want someone knowledgeable in that area.
  • Specifics: If you have a specific medical problem, injury or condition (such as being pregnant, heart problems, diabetes, etc.) make sure your trainer has education in these areas and will work with your doctor.
  • A good listener: A good trainer will listen closely to what you say and make sure he understands your goals.
  • Attention: A good trainer will be focused only on you during your sessions.
  • Tracking progress: A good trainer will regularly assess your progress and change things if necessary.

Personality is important too since you'll be working very closely with this person. Make sure you get along with your trainer and feel comfortable asking questions.

How to Find a Personal Trainer

One place to look is your local gym. Most gyms have personal trainers on staff and offer attractive packages for personal training. You can also look in your yellow pages, use a Personal Trainer Finder or American Council on Exercise, to find a trainer in your area. The cost will vary depending on where you live and your trainer's experience and education. Typically, the cost will be anywhere from $30 to $70 a session.

At some clubs, you may get assigned a trainer. However, one of my readers sent me these tips for doing a bit of investigation before you take the plunge:

  • Get a referral from a friend who's had success in reaching their goals with a personal trainer
  • When you're at the gym, watch trainers with their clients and see how they interact. Make a note of trainers who get along with their clients and seem fully involved in their workouts...that may be a good one to choose.
  • If you do get assigned to a trainer, make sure you tell the manager if you'd prefer a male trainer over a female trainer or vice versa, or if there's anything special you'd like to work on (getting in shape before pregnancy, getting ready for a marathon, etc.) so you'll get a trainer with experience in that area.
Like all professions, personal training has its share of losers. But, just because you're assigned to one trainer doesn't mean you can't work with someone else. It may be a personality conflict or you may wonder if you're getting the best advice. Either way, here are some warning flags that it's time to switch.

Beware if your trainer does any of the following:

  • Ignores or dismisses your questions
  • Works you so hard you're in pain for days. Soreness is normal, but you should still be able to get out of bed
  • Neglects any part of a complete program or recommends a level of training that's too hard for you
  • Recommends questionable supplements or herbs. Always talk to your doctor before taking anything!
  • Diagnoses injuries or illnesses instead of referring you to a doctor
  • Interrupts your session to talk to friends or take phone calls (unless it's an emergency or can't be avoided)
  • Doesn't return phone calls or emails

A personal trainer should watch you, correct your alignment, and explain what you're doing and why. If you're having problems, talk to them--they may not be aware there's a problem. Another option is to talk to the manager or terminate your sessions and look for a different trainer. It's your money and your body...you have a right to get what you want and a good trainer will understand that.

How to Help Your Trainer

You can help your trainer do a better job by being a good client.

  • Save the chit-chat for after your session.
  • Be prepared by bringing your own towel and a full water bottle.
  • Give at LEAST 24 hour notice if you need to cancel or reschedule
  • If you have questions, write them down and bring them to your session--you'll spend less time talking and more time working out.
  • If you have a problem with your trainer, address it immediately.
  • Don't interrupt your trainer when she's with a client. Wait until she's finished before approaching her.
  • Recognize that your trainer is there to guide you--but YOU still have to do the work!

New Group Exercise Program Starting This Week at Optimal Fitness Center!


This week we are starting up our Group Exercise Program @ Optimal Fitness Center. Group Exercise is not our top priority at the center given our limited number of classes. However, we do partner with Undisputed Gym down the street, where this area is their main focus.

The classes we do have our unique, time efficient and will give you great health & fitness benefits. In addition, they are intimate small group training classes which provide fun & socialization.

2002 Introduction to My Optimal Fitness Nutrition Program

I was looking back on a nutrition program I developed in 2001 and thought I would add the introduction on my Blog here in 2008. This was the start of my research in nutrition. I am now educating clients on Metabolic Typing, doing Detoxifications and lab work; however the foundation can be learned by reading below. Every year I continue to make my consulting better and better. In a few weeks I am taking another seminar to do in house & inexpensive lab work that can uncover biochemical imbalances . This will allow me to continue to get to the root of the problem rather than just treating symptoms.


Optimal Fitness Nutrition Program

Intro

There are many treatment methods and variables, which will allow an individual to achieve their goals. When the goal is weight management related (i.e. decrease weight loss and/or body fat loss) nutritional intake is the most important variable of them all. From my experience, 70-80% of successful weight loss and maintenance of that weight loss has to do with proper food intake. When I initially started training clients to reach their health and fitness goals I referred my clients to a Nutritionist for their specific nutritional needs. I only dealt with the strength and conditioning area given that my expertise was not that of a nutritionist. My client’s results were not good regardless of which Nutritionist they were seeing. The change in my client’s overall body composition was minimal due to their lack of adherence to these “cookie cutter programs.” I am not bashing all nutritionists. I truly believe, as in any profession there are good and bad. Nutritionists can play a significant roll given the right dietary program and client.

I agree with the thoughts of many non-traditionalists that something is definitely wrong with our current dietary recommendations. Our population continues to grow fatter and fatter each year despite our increased health consciousness and efforts to cut the fat out of our diets. Some nutritionists will argue that the reason why our population is getting fatter is because we are less active than ever before. Diet, lifestyle and lack of physical activity are contributing factors to our overweight society, with poor and inadequate nutritional intake playing the largest role. Stress also plays a significant role in weight gain and increases in body fat, which is not commonly considered as an influencing variable.

The USDA food pyramid emphasizes a high consumption of carbohydrates. We are told they are necessary because these nutrients are our primary energy source and will allow us to decrease our risk for Coronary Heart Disease. According to Dr. Philip Maffetone, author of In Fitness and in Health, if you follow the USDA recommendations, you are consuming two cups of sugar per day. Maffetone states that this is more carbohydrates than the human body can handle (1997). He believes that over eating high carbohydrate foods leads to an increase in fat storage and diminished human performance. This increase in fat storage will lead to other associated problems, which will increase the likelihood of Coronary Heart Disease. Both Dr. Maffetone and Dr. Scott Connelly (the developer of Met-Rx) believe that high carbohydrate consumption is a relatively new and problematic phenomenon for the human species. Looking back at the evolution of the human species, it was only within the last ten thousand years that humans started increasing their carbohydrate intakes to high levels. Before that point, our ancestors ate what they killed. Dr. Peter Adamo, author of Eat Right for Your Blood Type states that the story of humankind is the story of survival (1996). Neanderthals (50,000 BC) probably ate a crude diet of wild plants, grubs, and leftover kills of predatory animals based upon their lack of strength and skill for hunting. Around 40,000 BC our Cro-Magnon ancestors became skillful and hunted in packs. They became dangerous predators and they thrived on meat. 30-20,000 BC the Cro-Magnon's migrated to different areas of the globe in search of more food and new territories. They ate whatever they could find, which included a diet of berries, grubs, nuts, roots, fish and small animals. By 10,000 BC the Cro-Magnon's had exhausted the food supply due to their continuous population growth which led to war and further migration into new territories.

Adamo believes that somewhere between 25, 000 and 15,000 BC our ancestors were finally able to cultivate grains and livestock and this change in diet resulted in a new mutation in the digestive tracts and the immune systems of the Neolithic peoples of the Stone Age. This mutation was thought to enhance their ability to better tolerate and absorb cultivated grains and other agricultural products (Adamo, 1996).


Drs. Maffetone and Connelly believe that the relatively recent addition of carbohydrates to our diet is the contributing factor to our steady rise in obesity because we don’t have the capacity to tolerate and digest them as we do protein. Connelly further states that since 1980 we have seen a tremendous rise in the weight of our population and that this increase is getting worse instead of better (2000). Connelly describes our present predicament as a “carbohydrate overload". He states that as our society was warned of the danger of fats and told to decrease their consumption, there has been an increase in the production of refined foods. Americans are consuming more sucrose (sugar) than ever before to replace the fat content that was previously there. In addition to sucrose, manufacturers are adding malodextrins and high fructose corn syrup to almost anything that is a low fat replacement, for a higher fat product. These new refined carbohydrate products increase our blood sugar levels and stimulate excess insulin production, which may be the main culprit to our nation’s weight management problem.

Although I am an Exercise Physiologist and Holistic Trainer, and not a nutritionist, I have developed the Optimal Fitness Nutrition Program (OFNP) after a thorough review of the obesity studies and other reputable sources in the exercise science and nutrition field. I have also gathered invaluable information along my path of learning about holistic healing, which has allowed me to look outside the Western Clinical Box I grew up in. I intend to bring together Western and Eastern Perspectives on Weight Management.

In addition, the OFNP resulted from my own failed attempt to decrease my body fat following a diet high in carbohydrates. As a competitive baseball player and Exercise Science major at the University of California Davis, I was told that fat intake should be less than 30% of one’s total dietary intake. I was also brainwashed into believing that carbohydrates are good and fats are bad. For years I avoided fats like the plague. Everything I ate was fat-free. I consumed fat-free cookies, cakes, ice cream, and whatever else said, “New- Fat-Free” on the label. I had no regard for serving sizes, calories, sugar, fiber, carbohydrates, malodextrins, artificial sweeteners, Trans fats and high fructose corn syrup (which I should have been more concerned about). I could not understand why I could not lose the flab around my abdominals, even when I was eating the proper recommended fat-free healthy diet and working out daily. I tried abdominal exercises and I knew they wouldn’t work considering it is impossible to “spot reduce.” This was great for me considering I highly disliked doing abdominal work!

The turning point in my flabby belly was when a friend of mine introduced me to the Zone Diet by Barry Sears. Sears’ book, Mastering The Zone, challenged all of my traditional thoughts. Although Sears had no science to prove what he was saying and was ridiculed by Nutritionists, I saw incredible changes in my friend’s body composition. Within two weeks of decreasing his carbohydrates, he was lean and had abdominals for the first time. I was amazed. After I witnessed his transformation in such a little amount of time, I concluded that I was definitely doing something wrong. I read Mastering the Zone and followed the main principles of the diet, which were to increase my fats and proteins and decrease my carbohydrate intake.

I never counted calories or servings, which Sears suggested, because I felt his recommendations were to low for me as an athlete and it was too much effort. My main attempt was to achieve a balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fats in every meal and I, like my friend, decreased my body fat lower than it ever had been before!

OFC 21-DAY Purification & Weight Loss Program

Good evening everyone,

Last night we had the introduction to the first 21-DAY Purification & Weight Loss Group Program. We had an amazing turnout. I want to thank you all for attending. I also want to thank all of you that referred your friends and family members.
